Theme Bar Reviews

This section contains theme bar reviews I have written recently, primarily for the benefit of the Puget Sound area Polynesian Pop enthusiast community, and all widely available on the Tiki with Ray blog.

Strong Water

Anaheim, CA

Strong Water is a spectacularly themed nautical bar located in Anaheim less than ten minutes by car from the Disneyland Hotel. It has deep, thoughtful decor, delicious small plates, exceptional drinks, and even a “secret” Officers’ Club hidden away in the back with its own menu.

Dark Manor Inn

Vancouver, BC

This sadly defunct theme bar was one-of-a-kind. Visiting here was an immersive experience … with its mist-covered floor, creepy Victorian-esqe decor, and old ragtime songs playing in the background it was as if the Disney Haunted Mansion had suddenly decided to serve old-time pub fare and particularly unique and tasty whiskey drinks. The first time we opened the Manor’s front door, it was like magic.

Lost Spirits Distillery

Los Angeles, CA

This is not technically a bar review — though drinks were served — this is a review of what is without question the most unique and entertaining distillery tour we have ever been on. Buckle up!

Le Tiki Lounge

Paris, France

This review is of what is most likely an odd bird — a Parisian, neighborhood-type bar with a deeply tropical theme.

Dirty Dick

Paris, France

This review is of the internationally famous Dirty Dick bar. Once a brothel, the new management kept the name and turned it into a friendly tropical hideaway  with knowledgeable, friendly staff and outstanding drinks.

Tiki Chateau

Madrid, Spain

Another unusual experience abroad — this tiny tropical theme bar is run by a passionate home bar enthusiast who has turned his hobby into a personable, unique venue that just kept getting more interesting as the evening progressed. More like hanging out with an old friend in their immaculately appointed living room than going out!

Contributed several bar/restaurant reviews to James Teitelbaum’s book, Tiki Road Trip. My name is in the Acknowledgements section of the hard copy on my shelf.
